“Ka tū au ki runga, ka tīmata au ki te hikoi.”
“I stood up & began to walk.” .
Firstly, we stood, united. Now, together, we’ll walk.
We’ll walk, demanding the change & justice that’s deserved.
We’ll walk into a future of equality, where individuality is celebrated, a future without white supremacy.
We’ve taken a little time to create a piece in the hope of symbolising our collective grief, mourning, disgust, rebellion, strength & power.
This is “Hīkoi” – Taken from the Maori language this term’s general meaning is to protest & march, it implies a long journey ahead taking days/weeks.
This change has been too long awaited & this journey will not end soon, we must maintain momentum at all costs. ’Race’ is a social construct. We built it, we can deconstruct it.
”Hīkoi” holds an 18mmx13mm oval Onyx stone. The Onyx, in Peruvian & Native American traditions inspired feelings of personal power that comes from facing fears. We felt this stone would help with demanding the acknowledgement and accountability for the devaluation and dehumanisation of Black life at the hands of the police, at the hands of white supremacy. We hope that this stone will offer protection & security to those who stand, speak, learn & most importantly; protest.
In support of this movement, Bloody Mary Metal will be donating 100% profits from the sale of “Hīkoi” to Black Lives Matter.
Join the movement to fight for Freedom, Liberation and Justice.
