The Guide

The One

So You’ve Found The One

Now to Find the Ring!

So, you’ve found the girl (or guy!) of your dreams, and want to ask for their hand in marriage. How on earth do you go about choosing a ring that will guarantee the answer is “YES!”?

Well fear not, we’re pretty much experts in this field now, and we’re here to help you, every step of the way*

(*You’ll need to do the proposing yourself though, soz!)

Budget

Your Budget

Ok, let’s be real here. Traditionally, guys are told it should be 2-3 months wages but this is by no means a set rule! How much are you willing to spend? Though your bride-to-be would love a show-stopping ring, she would also probably appreciate you not being up to your eyeballs in debt too! Only you can work out your budget, but try to give us an ideal AND a maximum, so that we can give you some options to consider.

(And please try to be a little realistic — a completely custom, one off, hand engraved, insanely perfect diamond ring isn’t going to be possible if your budget is £250! Chat to us, we can help guide you along and create something perfect, for most budgets.)

Choose Your Metal

Choose Your Metal

Yellow Gold
A popular and classic choice, yellow gold is usually always a winner.
We can work in 9 carat or 18 carat, 9 carat being slightly more durable, and lighter in colour, 18 being a much richer, darker tone of gold.

Rose Gold
Rose Gold looks incredibly striking, and if you’re asking us we’d suggest setting pinky peach stones in Rose Gold, such as Morganite, Peach Sapphire or Champagne Diamond… (Caution: If you do this, you’ll have all of us BMM girls wishing you were proposing to us!).

White Gold
White Gold has more Silver and/or Palladium in the alloy, giving the metal a soft, grey colour. For a warm tone, which can be worn easily with Silver or Yellow and Rose Gold, go for 9 carat White Gold. For a cooler, icy tone, and where budget allows, go for 18 carat.

The Rock

Diamonds Are A Gals
Best Friend Aren’t They?

Well, sure. But a gal’s allowed more than one friend, right? There are so many incredible stones out there that your choice isn’t limited to diamonds alone. Think about the colours she wears, and the things she likes!

For pinky hues ask us about Morganite, Rubelite and Tourmaline.
For ocean blues consider Sapphire, Aquamarine and Chalcedony.
For sunshine peaches we’d recommend Peach Sapphire, Citrine or Champagne Diamonds.
And of course, if she’s a rock chick, we need to talk about Black Diamonds! Phoaaaarr!

Remember not all diamonds are brilliant white! They come in a vast range of colours, some natural, some treated, including pink, champagne, peach, chocolate and black! Like clarity, diamonds are graded in scale, ranging from D (colourless, most £££) to Z (a pale yellow).

The Cut

There’s no doubt, that a Diamond is the most classic, fail-safe option for an engagement ring. And if that’s what you’ve chosen, then you’ll need to consider:

Clarity
Precious stones have tiny mineral deposits within them, known in the trade as “inclusions”. Clarity is the graded system that works out how many imperfections a stone has. Long story short- the fewer inclusions, the clearer the stone and therefore the more expensive. The scale ranges from F (Flawless) to I3 for most imperfections.

Carat
Referring to the weight and size of the rock. Obviously, this is determined by your budget. Some guys will be glad to know that size isn’t everything, its the clarity and cut that will give the ring its bling!

Cut
Always go for a well cut diamond over clarity or carat. The cut will determine how the light is reflected and will give a sparkle your love can dazzle anyone with! A poorly cut diamond will lack lustre and appear dull. The Cut also refers to the shape of the stone- and this comes down to personal taste (Keep a close eye on the rings she already wears, are they round, or more geometric in style?

Setting

Choose Your Style

Try to think about rings she already wears, any clues she’s given you, and what she does on a day-to-day basis!

Stones set in Claw-style settings tend to sit higher off the finger. Its a beautiful and classic choice, but maybe not the most practical if she’s a hands-on kinda gal!

Talk to us about Bezel Settings if you think she needs something super secure and non-catchy (is that a thing?!) as these settings are gorgeous and uber popular here with the BMM girls!
Another option would be to set the stone “Flush” into the ring, leaving no edges or height above the band itself!

Ring Size

Ring Size

This is the tricky part, but lets be honest, getting the ring stuck over her knuckle mid-proposal isn’t that romantic! Drop hints waaaaay before the time so she doesn’t get suspicious. Ask one of her girlfriends (one who can keep a secret, obvs!).. HELL, STEAL ONE OF HER RINGS IF YOU HAVE TO!

Just please don’t ask us to guess for you! If you’re near BMM HQ or can borrow one of her rings for a few days, get down here or post it to us and we’ll take the size and get it back to you! We also have a ring sizer for £3, if you’re not worried about asking her upfront!
